Venice Biennale Names 332 Artists for 2024 Edition, Titled ‘Foreigners Everywhere’

The Venice Biennale, arguably the world’s most important recurring art exhibition, has named the 332 artists that will participate in this year’s edition, set to run from April 20 to November 24. The full list was revealed during a press conference in Venice on Thursday afternoon.

The number of artists featured in this year’s Biennale far surpasses the 213 artists that were included in the 2022 edition.

As usual, there will be a range of emerging, mid-career, and established living artists, with this year’s edition featuring Beatriz Cortez, Olga De Amaral, Hito Steyerl (through the Disobedience Archive), Simone Forti, Samia Halaby, Lauren Halsey, Rindon Johsnon, Bouchra Khalili, Teresa Margolles, Ahmed Morsi, Puppies Puppies (Jade Guanaro Kuriki), Zilia Sánchez, Ana Segovia, Yinka Shonibare, Superflex, Salman Toor, Kay WalkingStick, and WangShui.

But there will also be a number of well-known historical artists and recently deceased artists this time, such as Pacita Abad, Etel Adnan, Huguette Caland, Tarsila do Amaral, Carmen Herrera, María Izquierdo, Frida Kahlo, Wifredo Lam, Judith Lauand, Tina Modotti, Tomie Ohtake, Diego rivera, Freddy Rodriguez, Jewad Selim, Joaquin Torres-García, and Rubem Valentim.

Last June, Adriano Pedrosa, the show’s curator, announced that his Biennale exhibition would take the title of “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere,” which borrows its title from a series of neon works by Palermo-based French artist collective Claire Fontaine in several languages, including now extinct Indigenous ones.

Pedrosa, who is the artistic director of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, is well-known for his groundbreaking exhibition initiative “Histórias,” which turns over the museum’s programming for the year to under-known histories, such as those of Afro-Atlantic, Indigenous, women, and queer people.

During the press conference, Pedrosa said the Claire Fontaine works speak to “a world rife with multifarious crises concerning the movement and existence of people across countries, nations, territories, and borders, which reflect, in turn, the perils and pitfalls of language, translation, nationality, expressing differences and disparities conditioned by race, identity, nationality, gender, sexuality, freedom, and wealth.”

He continued, “In this panorama, the expression ‘Foreigners Everywhere’ has several meanings. First of all, that wherever you go, and wherever you are, you will always encounter foreigners. They—we—are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly and in deep down inside of foreigner. … Yet, one may also think of the expression as a motto, a slogan, a call to action, a cry of excitement, joy, or fear: ‘Foreigners Everywhere.’”

Pedrosa noted that the Biennale’s home, Venice, itself experiences visitors, or foreigners, daily, with tourists numbering more than 165,000 in a single day, compared with the local population of some 50,000.

Similar to the 2022 edition, which included several sections dedicated to historical work, Pedrosa’s edition will be divided into two parts, “Nucleo Contemporaneo” and “Nucleo Storico,” for contemporary and historical work, respectively.

Pedrosa said the guiding theme of the “Nucleo Contemporaneo” is an expansive definition of “foreigner” that also includes “the queer artist, who has moved within different sexualities and genders, often being persecuted or outlawed; the outsider artist, who is located at the margins of the art world, much like the self-taught artist, the folk artist, and the artista popular, as we call them in Brazil and Latin America, as well as the Indigenous artist, frequently treated as a foreigner in his or her own land.”

First-time Biennale participants who will take up the theme include the MAHKU—Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin collective from Brazil, the Mataaho Collective from Aotearoa (New Zealand), Erica Rutherford, Isaac Chong Wai, Elyla, Violeta Quispe, Louis Fratino, Dean Sameshima, and Evelyn Taocheng Wang, as well as three historical outsider female artists, Madge Gill, Anna Zemánková, and Aloïse Corbaz.

Additionally, the “Nucleo Contemporaneo” will include a section dedicated to the Disobedience Archive, a project founded by Milan-based curator Marco Scotini in 2005 that has collected “a video archive focusing on the relationships between artistic practices and activism” for nearly two decades, Pedrosa said. This section itself is divided into two sections “Diaspora activism” and “Gender Disobedience,” and will bring together the work of 39 artists and collectives made between 1975 and 2023.

The “Nucleo Storico” will focus on “global modernisms and modernisms of the Global South,” with three sections dedicated to portraiture and representation, abstraction, and the Italian diaspora in the Global South. This part brings together artworks made between 1905 and 1990 by 112 artists from the Global South, primarily ones from Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. But there will also be artists who were based in previously developing countries like Singapore and South Korea, as well as Māori artists from New Zealand.

Among the artists featured in the portraiture section are Selwyn Wilson, Cícero Dias, Yédemaria, Laura Rodig, Rómulo Rozo, Grace Salome Abra Kwami, Lee Qoede, Gerard Sekoto, and Inji Efflatoun, who was also shown in Okwui Enwezor’s 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition. Meanwhile, artists in the abstraction section include Samia Halaby, Eduardo Terrazas, Sandy Adsett, Fanny Sanín, and Etel Adnan, who is posthumously participating in the Biennale’s main exhibition for the first time. Several artists from the Casablanca Art School in Morocco (active in the 1960s and ’70s) will also be featured; the group was recently the subject of a major survey at Tate St Ives in England.

Artists in the Italian diasporic section include Lidy Prati, Bona Tibertelli de Pisis-Pieyre de Mandiargues, and Nenne Sanguineti Poggi, whose work will be exhibited in a Lina Bo Bardi–style glass easel display that is a hallmark of MASP’s permanent collection galleries, which Pedrosa restored during his tenure as artistic director. (Bo Bardi is also listed as a participant.)

Pedrosa said he considers this section “much like an essay, a draft, a speculative curatorial exercise that seeks to question the boundaries and definitions of modernism. We are all too familiar with the histories of modernism in Euro-America, yet the modernisms in the Global South remain largely unknown. Knowledge about these is limited to specialists in each individual country or region at best. Yet, connecting and exhibiting these worlds together will be somehow revealing. It is in these this sense that these histories assume a truly contemporary relevance, we urgently need to learn more about and from them.”

The show, Pedrosa said, is personal. “I myself feel very implicated in many of these themes, concepts, motifs, and frameworks in the exhibition. I have lived abroad and have been fortunate to travel extensively during my lifetime. Yet, often I have also experienced the treatment reserved to a third-world foreigner as I am, although never a refugee and, in fact, holding one of the highest-ranking passports from the Global South.”
