VERA LUTTER: LACMA REIMAGINED

October 30, 2017

As a part of Vera Lutter’s ongoing residency project at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), she has been engaged in a trifold project of documenting the museum’s exterior, interior galleries, and select works of art from the permanent collection utilizing her signature camera obscura methodology and other, customized, photographic techniques. The full scope of her residency, taking place since February 2017 and lasting until March 2018, revolves around the changing LACMA campus: the demolition of old buildings, the construction of new ones, and the ever evolving visual landscape of an institution as it expands.

During TEFAF New York Fall, from October 28–November 1 at the Park Avenue Armory, LACMA will be previewing a special selection of these new works. This sneak peek exhibition, a prelude to a residency culminating survey at LACMA in 2019, is entitled Painting on Paper: Vera Lutter’s Old Master Photographs. The video included here, produced by Sotheby’s, provides a behind-the-scenes look at this unique project, including more information on Lutter’s practice and specific approaches to the residency, as well as the changing campus of LACMA.
