Many sculptors have worked with polymer clay, but Russian artist Alisa (aka Liskaflower) is using the moldable material in a visually distinctive way to create one-of-a-kind jewelry. Rather than simply kneading, shaping, and smoothing out a large clump of clay, she creates multiple swirls out of dozens of pieces.

Using a variety of colors within the respective silhouette of her subject, Alisa’s polymer clay jewelry employs a visually exciting pattern reminiscent of another popular art form—paper quilling. Though these pieces aren’t made of paper, there’s an undeniable resemblance to the texture and visual effect of incorporating several, separate pieces of various colors with a distinct curvature in their shape. “I curl each pattern with my hands,” she says, “then many many pieces add up to a greater whole.”
Each piece in Alisa’s polymer clay jewelry collection offers a fun and colorful rendition of nature and wildlife. Occasionally, she mixes in food and pop culture. She actually began working with polymer clay by creating flowers. This practice eventually evolved into what it is today. It’s easy to see the influence of flowers in her work, as each hand-crafted curve looks a bit like a loose petal, swirling in the wind.
