Virus trading cards: a new way of “going viral”

Eleanor Lutz, who publishes the blog Tabletop Whale, is a PhD student in biology at the University of Washington. She uses her science background to create beautiful designs such as this project that deconstructs the wing patterns of different flying animals.

Lutz’ most recent project is a set of virus trading cards that reveal the sculptural beauty of the organisms. Surprisingly symmetrical, the animated GIFs show the virus’ protein shell that protects the genetic material of the virus. “I love them because they remind me of a biological version of snowflakes,” said Lutz.
