Recently, there’s been a new fascination with questionable architecture and dubious interiors spreading around social media.

Combining an uncanny appeal with cringe, these monstrosities have gained almost a cult following, and Bored Panda covered quite a few of them: from ugly Belgian houses, ridiculous real estate photos, and homes that made people say ‘that’s it, I’m home shaming.’

This Instagram page titled ‘What the Crazy House’ follows the trend by sharing some of the most bizarre and insane house exteriors and interiors people spotted on real estate websites.

To find out more about the “What The Crazy House” project, Bored Panda reached out to the creator behind it, Robyn from Ohio. “I’m married with 2 kids and I work part time at a shoe store,” he told us. Robyn said that he has always loved to look at houses. Once, he saw a space bedroom which became his first post. “It was unbelievably wild and I thought that I see weird stuff in the houses I look at all the time.”

That’s how he came up with an idea to put them all in one place and start the page. “On a whim one day, I made Whatthecrazyhouse. I don’t even think I remember how I came up with the name! It was just a split moment decision,” the creator said and added that he started “What The House” back in February, 2019 but he really didn’t get a following until this past year.

When asked how he’d describe his audience, Robyn said that they’re like him: “fun and snarky.” He added: “I’m proud to say they are nice and funny. I’ve never had a fight break out. Everyone is just here to laugh and make fun of stuff in a lighthearted manner.” Robyn really loves this page and he is super proud to run it. “It’s all for fun!,” he said.

The creator said that he “hates ’80s decor so he posts some of that.” “I am constantly seeing things I’ve never thought possible and that shock me. And then I think that someone did this… on purpose?! What?!!” he wondered.

We also asked Robyn what was the craziest house he has ever seen, and he said that “it’s a tie between the murder house and the cat poster house where cat pictures were EVERYWHERE. I mean it: they were all over the bathroom and kitchen and walls and ceiling. Just cats.”

When asked what could be the motives for why people design and build such crazy houses, Robyn said that this is how they express themselves or that they’re simply weird. “We are all a little weird, but sometimes things just go wacky and we get the wild things I post.”
