The Grammy nominations were announced last week. Forget record of the year, I went straight to the design noms. Of the five packaging design selections, I like Brian Roettinger’s art for Jay Z’s Magna Carta…Holy Grail off the Roc Nation label.
Roettinger samples grainy black-and-white, close-up photography of stone sculptures paired with clean typography to evoke both classic and contemporary feelings. Then to induce sensation, Roettinger uses censorship bars across some of the names and titles, blocking out enough to know that the contents are dangerous but also delightful. Genius inside and out!
