Willy Chavarria’s new ready-to-wear collection is shedding light on AIDS activism

Launched in one of New York’s leather bar is fashion designer Willy Chavarria’s latest clothing collection. It does not only highlight Chavarria’s Mexican-American background and cholo culture in California but also hand painted imagery depicting the long-standing struggle with AIDS.

The ready-to-wear collection ranges from bright, oversized turtle-necked tops with powerful imagery to square leather and khaki pants – all put together in captivating unison.

To successfully pull off the main idea of the “Cruising” collection, Chavarria collaborated with figurative painter Brian Calvin. Both Calvin and Chavarria grew up in the Central Valley of California. Both also experienced the initial, seemingly hopeless phase of AIDS. In fact, Brian Calvin himself has already created a series of paintings that highlight the trauma of the disease.

All the pieces in the collection will be sold in retail.
