Willy Verginer’s surreal wooden sculptures of people painted with different colors of acrylic

As someone who has had basic knowledge of woodwork, a profession that is practiced in his hometown Bressanone, it seemed like a natural thing for Willy Verginer to go back to his roots and work with wood for his recent project.

The Italian sculptor’s works involve working on solid pieces of linden wood, carving them out and creating certain physical attributes that consequently perfectly resembles a human form. He adds little details to them, sometimes painting with acrylic to highlight a particular element. Other times he would add other materials like little trees, animals, even light bulbs that complement the piece. His creations mimic the physical human form in a haunting way and communicate with the audience a whole new form of understanding in art.

His work has been once been featured in Galerie Majke Hüsstege in an exhibit entitled “Human Nature.” This year, however, his surreal work will be available to view and buy at Detroit’s Wasserman Projects Gallery until April.
