Growing up during the 90s was a wild ride. We had elite entertainment like Hey Arnold, All That and Boy Meets World. The music scene was iconic with amazing artists for anyone’s taste. Posters of bands like Nirvana, The Cranberries and the Spice Girls were plastered over bedrooms all across the globe, and computer games like Oregon Trail were just starting to take over kids’ lives.
And while I’m happy to be an adult today, I have to admit that I’d love the chance to send myself back to 1997 and enjoy one more cotton candy Trix yogurt. In my mind, the 90s were super recent. But it pains me to admit that this time was actually 25+ years ago, and the world has changed an incredible amount since then. What we call cell phones today would be unrecognizable to people in the 90s, and the internet has had a larger impact on our world than anyone could have ever predicted. Fashion from that time looks retro today, and even the lingo that teens use now wouldn’t make any sense to young people 30 years ago.
But no matter how much time has passed since the 90s, we still remember it like it was yesterday because that period is full of nostalgic memories. That’s why pages like 90sKidz90s on Instagram are such hits. This account, which has amassed an impressive 278k followers since its creation in 2015, can immediately flood visitors with memories from childhood. “From Johnny Tsunami to Britney and Justin’s joutfit, this page is for everyone who still dreams about being on Legends of the Hidden Temple,” the description states.

According to 90s Living, “The 1990s were a decade of change and transition, marked by significant cultural, social, and technological advancements.” The World Wide Web was created in 1991, and the world has never been the same since.
The 90s saw the very beginning of online commerce and the first stages of online dating and social media. Handheld gadgets like cell phones were beginning to gain popularity, and music players like portable CD players and Walkmans were amazing innovations. During this time, disposable cameras also made it possible for anyone to shoot on film whenever they wanted to.

If you were a 90s kid, you’re likely familiar with the most iconic toys and games of the decade as well. Tamagotchis were huge hits, and Furby became a household name extremely quickly. Video games were rapidly improving as well, and games like Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog were desired by every tech savvy kid. In general, kids began spending a lot more time in front of screens during this decade, as VHS tapes and Blockbuster made watching movies more accessible too. The Disney Channel had been around since 1983, but we can all agree that the 90s was definitely the golden age of Disney Channel Original Movies, or DCOMs.

Feeling hungry? If it was 1995 right now, you might reach for Bagel Bites or a Hot Pocket. Kid Cuisine was also a favorite at dinner time when my parents didn’t feel like cooking. Breakfast might include Pop-Tarts, a Toaster Strudel or Trix yogurt. And if you were lucky, you might have been given Gushers or a Capri Sun in your lunch box. Convenience foods and snacks have always been growing in popularity, and the 90s was a new age of sugary treats marketed specifically to kids.

Now, we would be remiss to talk about the 90s without discussing the iconic fashion of the era. Depending on your age and what scene you were in, you might have been immersed in grunge style with Dr. Martens and flannel shirts or covered in bright colors and baggy jeans that told everyone how much you loved hip-hop. High-waisted mom jeans were totally in, and hoop earrings, choker necklaces and slap bracelets were considered high fashion amongst teen girls.

The 90s was also an excellent era of television. Plenty of people who didn’t even grow up during this time are obsessed with sitcoms like Friends, Seinfeld and The Nanny today. And for kids, it was possible to turn on the TV and catch episodes of Rugrats, Full House, Family Matters, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Powerpuff Girls and Clarissa Explains It All. Now, not all of these shows have aged spotlessly, but many of them can still be enjoyed today!

Speaking of entertainment, there were plenty of classic films that came out of the 90s as well. Clueless is one of my personal favorites, and Girl, Interrupted is an amazing film if you’re looking for something cathartic. But the decade was fabulous for rom-coms as well. The 1990s gave us Pretty Woman, You’ve Got Mail, The Wedding Singer, Notting Hill, 10 Things I Hate About You, Never Been Kissed, Sleepless in Seattle and more.
