15 porcelain sculptures address human impact on the environment

Often combining human forms with those of animals or plant life, sculptor Kate Macdowell has created a striking series of porcelain sculptures that are a delicate balance between beautiful and uncomfortable. The ghostly white sculptures are unadorned with surface decoration, letting the forms and their textures take center stage.

The intent behind the sculptures is to explore the impact of humanity on the environment by addressing topics such as climate change, toxic pollution, and genetically-modified crops. Yet the work goes beyond this intellectual intent. The artists states, “They also borrow from myth, art history, figures of speech and other cultural touchstones.”
