As 3D printing technology continues to evolve, a new leap has been made by MIT’s Mediated Matter Group who worked in collaboration with MIT’s Glass Lab, the college’s Mechanical Engineering Department, and Wyss Institute.
Called G3DP, which stands for Glass 3D Printing, the manufacturing technology has two heated chambers to support the necessary chemical properties of molten glass. With temperatures topping out at 1900°F, the upper “Kiln Cartridge” melts the glass prior to printing and the lower chamber slowly cools the printed forms so ensure structural stability. Thus, the printer’s mechanism transforms the glass material into the designer’s printing specifications.
