8 portraits show the gorgeous transformation of the people behind Burlesque

Burlesque began in a simpler form a few hundred years ago and has evolved into an increasingly popular modern art performance combining dance, comedy and strip-tease. The performers’ costumes are gaudy and overly-embellished giving the individual underneath a new identity, like Dr. Gingersnaps or Dolly Longlegs.

In a portrait series simply titled ‘Burlesque,’ Sean Scheidt shows the transformation of person to performer. The side-by-side comparative images are startling and beautiful documenting the radical change. What is most striking is the reserved, and sometimes timid, out-of-costume photos compared to the fearless, posed and more revealing, dolled-up characters.
