Vines and rosebuds take over ornate ceramic busts

Expressionless busts aren’t fun. Jess Riva Cooper is rectifying this through her series of smooth ceramic busts with mouths wide open in awe.

The Toronto-based artist juxtaposes ornamentation with destruction through tangled vines and rosebuds that sprout out from the busts’ noses, mouths and cover facial features. The sculptures were inspired by worsening economic and environmental conditions in places such as Detroit, Michigan where homes have received similar treatments from plant-life surrounding them. Cooper currently teaches at Sheridan College.
