A flock of 2,000 pigeons strapped with LED lights take to the skies of NYC

Artist Duke Riley has partnered with Creative Time for an art performance in the night skies of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The project Fly By Night, involves more than 2,000 trained pigeons, each with a tiny LED light strapped to its leg. As the dusk turns to a dark night sky, the patterns of bird flight seems to transform into a choreographed dance.

The artist was inspired by the pigeons of World War II that were trained to deliver messages. He has described the work as though it was a moving constellation or a collection of tiny shooting stars. Many of the birds are from Riley’s personal flock, and he explained in an interview, “I think it’s a collaborative project between me and the pigeons, whether it’s a performance or maybe it’s a drawing that they’re doing in the sky.”
