A massive 3-story installation of chairs

“1550 Chairs Stacked Between Two City Buildings” is the title of a piece that Doris Salcedo created as part of the Istanbul Biennial. Using the vacant lot between two buildings, the artist installed a mass of chairs in the space, stacking the chairs to reach three-stories high.

Although the work can be seen as purely a visual delight, the artist addresses weighty topics by “evoking the masses of faceless migrants who underpin our globalized economy”. The Colombian-born sculptor has a degree from NYU and is based in Bogota.

In the interview below, Salcedo gives insight into the meaning behind the piece.
