A Simple Chair Design with an Unusual Detail

The subtle and unusual gesture in this Lizzy chair, by veteran industrial designer David Dolcini, speaks of an expertise in both design and fabrication. All four legs stretch above the seat bottom to meet the back, resolving their differing angles of approach to harmonize at the last moment.

At least, that’s how I saw it, from bottom-to-top. Dolcini describes the same transition as happening top-to-bottom: “Stems and leaves are playing and brushing against one another to then take different directions.”

The chair consists of eight elements: The four legs, the seatback, the two seat bottom supports and the seat bottom itself. All are solid wood except the seat bottom, which is made from bent plywood.

Dolcini has design studios in both Codogno, in northern Italy, and Valencia, Spain. Lizzy is in production by Italian furniture brand Arflex.
