An abandoned highway in Seoul, Korea has been transformed into a truly inspiring “plant village” – a greener contrast to the noise and traffic in the busy streets below. The 983-meter long elevated walkway was first built in 1970 was only just recently renovated by the Dutch architectural firm MVRDV. The studio has also decided to call it the Seoullo 7017 is Korea – a name that acknowledges both years of work done on the highway.
The sky garden is home to almost 24,000 plant species and also has shops, galleries, restaurants, and teahouses to boast. Pedestrian ramps were also installed as well as elevators and stairs for people to easily get off any exit they want.

“Our design offers a living dictionary of plants which are part of the natural heritage of South Korea and now, existing in the city center,” Winy Maas of MVRDV explains. “The idea here is to connect city dwellers with nature.”
