An Elegant Knockdown Table/Desk with Wedged-Tenon Joinery

This handsome Taut table is by Klemens Grund, a designer and master carpenter based in Switzerland.

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

The elegantly-thin stretchers mate with the legs using a blind dovetail through-mortise, and lock into place when the wedges are tapped in.

“This table is inspired by the laws of classic Japanese wooden architecture: columns are usually round because their load is carried through the center. Horizontal elements have an edgewise, rectangular cross-section. Principles like these fascinate me because they work within us. Every child who plays with building blocks feeds their subconscious with static understanding. It understands. That is in all people. Touching this level with functional objects interests me. Taut has no metal parts and can be disassembled or assembled in just a few simple steps. A table for demanding mobile life.”

Pre-pandemic, the table was in production by German manufacturer Zeitraum.
