An inspiring art tribute made from a common cooking ingredient

The closest most people have come to making art with common table salt is probably playing with homemade salt dough as kids. It’s not exactly the first medium that comes to mind, particularly when one is creating a tribute to a lost loved one.

But table salt is exactly what Motoi Yamamoto has used to create intricate designs in memory of his little sister, who died of brain cancer. Originally, he created a 3D representation of a brain, but then decided to see what the patterns of the brain would look like flattened out.

He spends hundreds of hours pouring salt directly on the gallery floor, creating amazingly intricate patterns that resemble a labyrinth. The results are stunning, with a level of detail that seems almost impossible.
