Anti-Tampering Screws and Bolts with Smiley Face Heads

These anti-tampering screws and bolts are neither Philips, nor flathead. Instead they’re…smiley.

Smiley Screws were designed by Tokyo-based designer Yuma Kano and are manufactured by screw maker Komuro Industries. By virtue of the proprietary head, they are de facto anti-tampering, though it’s not clear if that was the design intent. While Kano does show photos of the screws in 20-packs and what looks to be a 50-pack…

…I could only find them being sold online in parsimonious packages of five, suggesting they’re for novelty rather than institutional use.

The kit comes with five Smiley Screws and three tools: The smiley driver, a manual drill and for some reason, a Philips head.

It’s a shame these aren’t widespread; I do think they’d put a smile on people’s faces when they’re sitting inside a public restroom stall.
