Art and China after 1989: Liu Wei

Artist Liu Wei discusses his participation in the Post-Sense Sensibility group founded in 1999, which sought “a freer means of expression.” He also recalls how the 2004 Shanghai Biennial and other exhibitions “legitimized” contemporary art in China, and describes the challenge of adapting to these market changes as an artist.

Liu Wei is one of 71 artists participating in “Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World,” on view at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from October 6, 2017, to January 7, 2018.
