Bizarrely compelling ceramic sculptures

Merging modern and traditional sculpture, Julie Moon’s ceramic work is hard to classify. Simultaneously ornamental, biological and edible: does one refer to her pieces as figures, objects, or food?

Contextualizing familiar forms amongst the unexpected and bizarre, like arms protruding from beehive-like mounds, Moon’s creations take on a language of their own. Her objects seem to allude to complex metaphors or narrations of personality and culture. A previous background in Toronto’s garment industry lends an element of decoration and impressive craftsmanship to Moon’s work.
