Yarn bombing is a glorious rebellious act combining the seemingly conflicting cultures of craft and street art. It is always a pleasant surprise to head downtown to your favorite pub and see a neighborhood tree snuggly wrapped in a colorful crocheted sweater (they just look so cosy!). Taking this trend to an even more absurd level, and completely negating any sense of “purpose” in the act, crochet artist Olek has yarn bombed a bunch of things underwater.
This just feels weird. The thought of a wet sweater gives me the creeps, and to be trapped in one…I’m not going to sleep well tonight. Despite my preconceptions about wet clothing, Olek did manage to make the yarn-bombed objects, like a bomb (har har), a little more friendly looking. The whole project was completed using environmentally friendly materials and aims to raise awareness about the world’s declining shark population as a result of overfishing and pollution. The installation is apart of an exhibition for the Museo Subacuatico de Arte in Cancun, Mexico. You can see the challenging installation process and fun images below!
