#GagosianViewingRoom: Dan Colen’s “The Lost Will be Drowned” features in our Frieze London 2018 Online Viewing Room.
“The Lost Will be Drowned” comes from a series of large-scale paintings in which Colen has affixed metal studs—typically adornments for leather jackets donned by punk rock enthusiasts—to canvas. Applying stud after stud to fill the surrounding canvas in predetermined patterns, Colen’s labor-intensive process introduces shimmering, undulating patterns and organic variations into what one might otherwise expect to be a uniform composition.
