Dawn by LAUN Is a Future-Forward Collection of Furniture

Best known for sculptural, California-inspired indoor/outdoor furniture, collaborative design studio LAUN Los Angeles has dropped a new future-forward collection. Their inspiration was the symbolism found in Octavia Butler’s cult 1980s science fiction novel: Dawn.

“The pieces in this collection are some of our most bold to date. The strangeness and pause of the past few years gave us the freedom to think in a different way, to push ourselves creatively and play with the possibilities of color, scale, and materiality,” says LAUN founder Molly Purnell. “With the launch of Dawn, we are excited to showcase a more experimental side of the studio.”

Dawn is a four-piece furniture collection that shows off LAUN founders Rachel Bullock and Molly Purnell’s skills in architecture, metal fabrication, and overall approach to form and material. The curvaceous Octavia lounge chair is an update on a little known 1950s armchair prototype by Jean Royère. It’s available cast in aluminum or fiberglass. The Octavia is accompanied by two playful Butler tables, made with polished or powder coated aluminum tops and silicone cord fringe. With lots of movement, they emphasize a material often found in furniture but rarely visible.
