Dirty watercolors highlight the problems with Manila River

Nine Filipino artists are using sterilized pigment from the polluted Manila River to make a point. With watercolor paints from contaminated waters in the Philippines, the nine painters used these dirty water pigments to promote awareness of the neglected state of the Philippine environment.

Slums and makeshift towns along the Manila river are standard. And these towns house people who use this river: children bathe, people use it as a sewage system. The team involved, photographed the scenes they found on the banks and used them as inspiration. Thus this collection of paintings showcase everyday scenes commonly found on the river banks where the water is collected from. And the paintings are are shock to the system.

Ranging from black to grey to various shades of brown, the watercolors started as soil straight from the Manila riverbed. The soil samples from the river were processed, decontaminated and then dried. Finally, the pigments were mixed with a gum arabic solution to finally become watercolor.

The paintings are currently on display at Manila Mall and are going for around $800.00 and all proceeds go towards rehabilitating the river waters in the Philippines.
