Toy dolls are creepy as they are, but human-looking dolls are downright horrific. No one can deny that there is a lot we can learn from dolls, but some people take this too far by changing their physical appearance to look like them. Photographer Laurie Simmons made it her goal to understand why some people turn themselves into living, breathing Barbie Dolls in her latest series, ‘How We See.’
The creepy portraits feature real female subjects with eyelids turned doll-like through the magic of makeup. The Jewish Museum describes the series best by saying, “In How We See, Simmons goes beyond the disturbing questions raised by the “Doll Girls” community to explore notions of beauty, identity, and persona.” Check out some of the portraits below and visit Simmons’ website for more.
