Everyday materials transformed into gorgeous small-scale oil factories

David LaChapelle made his name photographing A-List celebrities, however, for his series ‘Land Scape,’ he turned his lens to a rather unexpected subject – environmental activism.

With help from people who work on Hollywood movie props, mundane everyday materials like candy wrappers, cardboard, egg crates, hair rollers and more are transformed into highly-detailed small-scale models of oil refineries. All the constructions are gorgeously lit and shot with LaChapelle’s trademark style – an unapologetically garish and hyper-saturated look. Believe it or not, the desert-based backgrounds are actually all real. A commentary on our consumption of fossil fuels, the series requires the viewer to stop and take a second look beyond the pretty candy colors and scenery.
