Artist Yuni Kim Lang explains that she is interested in “themes of weight, mass, accumulation, hair and cultural identity.” She stated that she “is fascinated by what people give power and meaning to, along with our obsession with adornment.”
The pictured series of works, titled ‘Comfort Hair,’ was inspired by the Gache, a large wig worn by Korean women of high social backgrounds that was popular in the 1700s. The work extrapolates off this concept with a women’s hairpiece composed of rope and synthetic materials and extending far beyond what one body could manage. The artist states: “So powerful and beautiful yet so burdensome and heavy. It is this intense, overwhelming, yet so satisfying relationship with our hair that makes us obsess over it.”
