Explore this cottage-shrine to a fictional person’s life and death

After nearly 5 years, acclaimed British artist Grayson Perry has finished a new architecture-art-narrative stunt in the town of Essex, England. The small house titled “A House for Essex” is a cottage-shrine to a fictional Essex woman named Julie Cope whose story of life and death is told through the decorative interior.

By exploring the home you will learn about Cope’s dating life, profession, divorce, and tragic death in a traffic accident. The story is revealed through kitsch, mostly ceramic, decorations like mosaics, and tiles. The interactive work is about highlighting the extraordinary lives of ordinary people.

“What you realize is that happiness is not this exotic peak of ecstasy,” Perry explained to a Channel 4 reporter. “People think that happiness is over-adrenalized peaks of ecstasy and that happiness— most people are happiest with their friends and family, going out for a drink, walking the dog, hanging out. That’s what happiness is. It’s not bungee jumping. It’s not swimming with dolphins. It’s not getting married in a foreign country in a big castle. It’s, like, at home.”
