Shaomin’s sculptures are hybrids, compiled using various animal and human skeletons and displayed as if archaeological museum pieces. The bones are relief-carved with phrases taken from sacred texts, sending an ominous warning to the audience: that humans are destroying their world.
Skeletons and fossils are often associated with their ability to reveal past truths and histories. Shaomin’s skeletons reveal the underlying violence of human intervention, ripping apart and reorganizing the natural world to create life systems that are unsustainable and deformed–incapable of procreating.
