Failed Product Designs: A Laptop with Seven Screens

A British company called Expanscape developed this monstrosity, known as the Aurora 7:

Listen beautiful relax classics on our Youtube channel.

If you haven’t guessed, the “7” in the name refers to the number of screens. You’re looking at four 17.3″ monitors, the outermost of which each have a 9.7″ monitor perched upon them. A 7″ touchscreen on the base, fore of the keyboard rounds out the pack.

The thing reportedly weighed 12kg (26.4 lbs) and would be made-to-order for north of $20,000. With all those screens, battery life was a problem, offering just an hour of unplugged time. But it was never meant to be a true laptop, not at 4.3″ thick; it was aimed at people who needed to examine a lot of data and occasionally move their workstation. Imagine a research scientist or repair technician whose attention was required in multiple parts of a facility throughout the day, for instance.

In the end, there weren’t enough takers, and Expanscape went belly up at the end of 2023. But perhaps the surviving images of this behemoth will inspire a future developer to design something more manageable.
