Graphic, kinetic, layered …. this is what makes up my basic style.

I do what are considered paintings, but they could also be thought of as flat sculptures in that they have depth, painted sides and a finish unlike most paintings.

The evolution has been in complexity; more layering which creates a greater sense of depth and a more balanced image that integrates the various components into a unified piece.

My process and images are a part of a long exploration of shapes, textures and color that involves sanding away much of the paint. Multiple color coats are repeatedly removed, giving the impression of a work that has aged and of colors long buried.

After a layer of paint is applied and sanded, a coat of clear is applied which both protects the paint and adds depth to the layers. I can now paint over areas that don’t work and save areas that do. This process is repeated as many times as necessary.

The panels, which I build by hand, have depth, extending the painting surface and allowing the image to continue around the sides. They have a certain heft, reminiscent of a slab of stone or a solid block of wood.

The pattern of marks that I use could be considered old (or could be modern.) They are typical tribal designs with an element of street graffiti.

The smooth surface begs to be touched, which I encourage.

This combination comes together into a piece that invites study, to be viewed in different light, revealing details to be discovered over time.

Like a lot of artists, working on developing a consistent style is always the goal and a challenge. I want to keep a recognizable look from one piece to the next and wrap it together with a type of execution and craftsmanship that I find engaging, and that others will hopefully find engaging as well.
