This is my story of the inspiration behind my art and how I got here.

To sum up my painting very simply, I want to share and celebrate a sense of wonder through the many moods of natural light.

I am a landscape painter working in pastel and oil. For me, it is all about the light.

I had a love of creating from a very early age. I was fortunate enough to have been encouraged to create with a set of tube watercolors and painting lessons. My parents also took me to galleries in Woodstock, New York and Manhattan, and to concerts and plays. These were unusual activities in our working-class environment.

As I look back from the perspective of an experienced artist, it was truly the exposure to world class art and a submersion in just about everything that was going on in the art world in New York City that was my real education. I did take some college art classes, which were useless in my opinion, as painting in a realist manner was considered passé back in the early seventies. As a result I worked very hard, for a very long time, on my own to develop my artistic ability.

I was encouraged early in my career when Lowry Sims, then a curator of painting at the Metropolitan Museum of art, recognized my abilities. Shortly thereafter I took a workshop in pastel. It was an eye-opening experience. I secured gallery representation and entered into invitational and juried shows, where I won awards.

For those who pay attention to such things, I have achieved signature membership with the Pastel Society of America, American women Artists, Distinguished Pastellist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast, Distinguished Artist with the Arizona Pastel Association. The most meaningful to me is a signature distinction with the American Impressionist Society.

I continue to learn, challenge myself and grow, as it truly is a never-ending quest. My connection to our natural surroundings is at the core of my work. Nature is my solace and joy.

I work both en plein air and in the studio. I believe very strongly that as a landscape painter it is necessary to work on location, directly observing the countless nuances and moods of nature. The studio work is just as important, as it is here where I can experiment, hone my technical skills and focus on making better paintings.

As time has gone by, my work is more about the quality of the light spilling across the surface rather than the specific locale. Whether the light is dappled, dazzling full brilliance, dim and mysterious, glorious and glowing—all its moods catch my eye. Sometimes, but not always, I think I have captured it, and that keeps me going.
