Find beauty underneath layers of masks — artist shows grace in removing many faces

The National Portrait Gallery, in association with Gillian Wearing and the Gillian Wearing & Claude Cahun Supporters Group, will host an exhibition from March 9 to May 29, 2017. It will showcase the fusion of Claude Cahun, a renowned French artist extraordinaire, and Gillian Wearing, one of the most impressive contemporary talents to come from Britain today.

The two artists may be generations apart and have such diverse backgrounds, but this is not enough to deter the common ground that creates a parallel path for them. For one, they love self-portraits and using “self-image” in general, using photography. In doing so, issues revolving around sexuality, gender, and identity are given a closer look.
