Fruits and veggies transformed into lifelike face sculptures

What began as jack-o-lantern carving has evolved into a collective of artists who claim fruits and vegetables as their medium. Shawn Feeney is the founder of The Invisible Underground which claims to be the “premier studio for creative fruit carving, vegetable sculpture, and edible alchemy.” Perhaps their claims hold true as the group recently made it into the Guinness Book of World Records in the “Largest Fruit Sculpture” category for a 2013 sculpture of a 10-foot tree made of fruit.

Feeney developed his skill while working as a forensic artist for the New York Police Department where realism and accuracy is, of course, a prime concern. Speaking to Modern Farmer magazine, Feeney addressed the impermanence of his sculpture medium: “As long as I get a good photograph, I’m happy with it… There’s a sunset every night. We don’t begrudge the sun because it could always come out again.”
