‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Go on a Quest to Match Scenes with Their Real-Life Filming Locations

Northern Ireland

For years, travel bloggers and entertainment enthusiasts Tiia Ohman and Satu Walden—the founders of Finnish website Fangirl Quest—have documented their visits to various filming locations across the globe. While the Finnish duo has explored and presented locations from a range of movies and television shows, no program appears to have captured their attention quite like HBO’s hit, Game of Thrones

To celebrate the arrival of the series’ seventh season, Ohman and Walden have published a comprehensive Game of Thrones Filming Locations Guide. In addition to maps and descriptions, the directory features travel photos and clever examples of sceneframing. Described as “the heart and soul of Fangirl Quest,” sceneframing involves aligning a still photograph from a movie or show with the scene’s real-life surroundings.

In the case of Game of Thrones, most of Fangirl Quest’s sceneframing photos are set in the forests, beaches, and ruins of Northern Ireland, where the pair recently took a road trip. Intended solely as a way to see—and sceneframe—the familiar sights from their beloved show, the jam-packed journey took less than 4 days. “We started early each morning and drove around looking for the locations until sunset . . . and sometimes long after,” Fangirl Quest explains on their website. “Whatever your pace, this trip is something you could call the trip of a lifetime: stunning scenery, incredible history and some of the loveliest locations we’ve ever visited!”

If you’d like to follow in the fan girls’ footsteps, check out the interactive map included with their helpful guide.
