Grotesque live human sculptures impersonate pop icons

Art sometimes must be provocative and challenging, in order to attract more attention to common problems in society. This is the case of talented Canadian artist Marie-Lou Desmeules, who uses live human models as canvases to express her ideas. She calls her creative process “surgery” and I have to admit, it is an appropriate name for what she is doing.

The artist’s models become almost like real life sculptures, who usually represent historical or modern-day icons: celebrities, world leaders, artists. Using a wild mix of different mediums like photography, sculpture, paint, plastic, and performance, Desmeules bravely talks about sensitive topics like excessive worship of celebrities, leaders, the human body, the expanding plastic surgery industry, and gender identity. You can find different personalities in Desmeules’ collection, including Karl Lagerfield, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Steve Jobs, Pamela Anderson, even Barbie doll.
