Designmonat Graz 2019 invites you from May 10 to June 9 to the Austrian UNESCO City of Design. Once again we joined a weekend in Graz to show you part of the programme organized by Designmonat Graz, and more precisely by Creative Industries Styria.
As said before, the main focus this year was “Women & Design”. Let’s see highlights from Graz, Austria!
MUTAMO
Mutamo is a new platform helping designers to successfully produce and distribute their products. “Many designers aim at creating a unique product but often fail when it comes to distribution,” explains Benjamin Pernthaler of the design studio zweithaler that developed the new platform together with the carpentry mtdesign.
The platform Mutamo focuses on working with wood. Present at Designmonat Graz #ashtag by Markus Well – a practical coaster that sticks to pots and metal dishes thanks to a hidden magnet. Graz-based designer Markus Well found this partner in Mutamo and finally he can turn his ideas into design concepts.
Also on display: the “Orto” shelving system by zweithaler which can be assembled without tools.
WORLD WIDE THINGS COLLECTION
The exhibition shows typical local products from the UNESCO Cities of Design: Istanbul, Puebla, Mexico City, Detroit, Saint-Etienne, Singapur and Graz. This growing selection is presented in different formats such as exhibitions, shops, conferences, meetings, conventions and online.
This year This years Design Month Graz 2019 will display about 120 products at Neue Galerie, Joanneumsviertel. One can spot Detroit-based design studio Aratani Fay with the Lawless chair and Doris Darling’s lamps (pictures below).

ISTANBUL DESIGN COLLECTION
Istanbul inspires and the UNESCO City of Design has always provided many links for creative professionals and their work. The complexity of the city also reflects in the various design disciplines that have developed in Istanbul: graphic and industrial design, fashion, architecture, but also traditional handicrafts, plus a selection of Turkish design culture from several decades.
AD MENSAM
AD MENSAM is a design exhibition exploring the rituals of the table. And what about the location? From 17- 27 May 2019, Schloss Hollenegg for Design will open the door to visitors, hosting a unique exhibition. It will be the occasion in which our designers in residence – OS&OOS, Nel Verbeke, Katie Scott and Katie Stout – will present their new projects.
TO DEATH WITH A SMILE
A poster competition organized by the MUMEDI (Museo Mexicano del Diseño, Mexico City) that deals with the topic of death and its different anchoring in the collective consciousness of cultures. Following the main theme of Designmonat Graz 2019, all works shown are by women.
In Mexico the cult of death is a deeply rooted tradition, and in that tradition is a very particular character that is the Catrina. This is the feminine personification of death.
