How a Single Cylinder Becomes a Chair or a Table

Armenian-American designer Ara Thorose has an interesting way of creating furniture. “I approach design as a game. What’s the most efficient way for a cylinder to become a chair?” he proses. As it turns out, he’ll end up using his own body to create his latest furniture collection, BOYD Works. Using the width of his thigh as the basis for the cylinders, he has created a physical abstraction of his self as the basis for the collection. Even the name itself, BOYD, is a reordering of the word ‘body’ that loses its original meaning while still retaining an essence of ‘body’ness. Each object is hand made using a variety of materials, including latex, PVC rubber, polyurethane foam, fabric, glass, and neoprene. The sinuous, minimalist forms look like sculptures in an art gallery before you realize their true functional purpose.
