Innovative wall clock uses magnetized liquid blobs to tell time

Ferrolic is a self-contained wall clock, designed by Zelf Koelman, that uses ferrofluid — a liquid that magnetizes itself in the presence of a magnetic field — to create bizarre shapes that self-arrange into recognizable shapes. In this case, the blobs, which Koelman jokingly calls his “creatures”, appear to be numbers.

Describing the science and use of ferrofluid in the project, Koelman says, “Because the fluid behaves in a unpredictable way, it is possible to give the bodies perceived in the Ferrolic display a strong reference to living creatures.” Check out the video linked below to see how the Ferrolic works and visit its website for more information.
