Fuco Ueda is a Japanese painter well-known for her beautiful portraits of long-haired, waifish girls in dreamlike, morbid scenarios bursting with intimacy. The innocent-looking female characters are surrounded by nature’s bounty, with a longing sense of loneliness that exists within the boundaries of dreams and reality. Through floating illusions, Ueda conjures up a glimpse of the “deep psyche of the human mind.” There’s a stark contrast between the colorful flora, fauna, and butterflies surrounding the girls and their mystic, ghostlike appearances.
Fuco Ueda’s recent works are currently on exhibition (through May 2nd) at Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC, as a part of ‘Japanese Human Sensors’ curated by Tokyo-based Gallery Kogure.
