Italian Artist Gemis Luciani

Formal reduction by Italian artist Gemis Luciani.

Gemis Luciani recently suggested me to review his portfolio and I really like what I could see on his website! Gemis Luciani is an Italian artist who currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. His artistic work is based on an act of “formal reduction”. Using a variety of papers, he manipulates and re-assembles diverse objects such as magazines, newspapers, phone books, flyers, etc. This way, the Italian artist reconfigures these materials into newly built objects of shapes and surfaces.

Gemis Luciani has graduated in Sculpture from Fine Arts Academy in Bologna. In addition, he has studied photography at Art Kunst Institute in Enschede (NL) and started a creative collaboration with Teatrino Clandestino, a popular fringe theater company from Italy.

A small selection of artworks can be found below. For more, please visit Gemis Luciani’s website.

External Definition – sliced flyers on a plinth. “External Definition is a series of sculptures investigating the definition of a space. In this work, the plinth is an essential element as it determines the arrangement of books positioned on it. The base’s edges delineate an internal area and establish its borders, which then vertically mark out the battery of books by deducting the parts stretching out. The plinth defines the sculpture’s negative space.”
Empty Area – folded newspaper on dibond with frame. “Empty Area is a group of three works produced by progressively folding the pages of international newspapers so that the textual elements are completely erased. The newspapers have been chosen according to their color palettes.”
Marginal Composition – folded magazine on dibond with frame. “Marginal Compositions is a project in development centered on the investigation of a marginal space’s aesthetic qualities. The works are realized with various magazines. Every magazine’s page is folded in a way to erase the textual element of the previous page and to leave only the margin visible. The compositions are produced by repeating this action until the magazine’s surface is completely covered. Every work is a representative but not definitive image documenting this kind of space’s expressive potential.”
Terminal Surface – 5000 overlapping strips of cutted pages. “Terminal Surface is a series of five works realized by cutting magazines along their vertical lines. Every work is produced by overlapping strips of paper so that only the edge is visible.”
Piece of space
“Piece of Space is a research project on the relationship between word and image in the visual representation of urban spaces. The works are realized using telephone books, cut and fixed to the wall.”
