Luigi Colani's Combination Bed/Workstation/Closet for Children

This Rappelkiste was designed in 1975 by the prolific German industrial designer Luigi Colani. Created for furniture manufacturer Elbro, it’s a combination bed/desk/clothes storage unit for children.

The dowels used for the climbing bars, furniture supports and the doorknob are held in place by wedged tenons (also called tusk tenons).

Though the corners of the form are rounded, the predominantly rectilinear piece is a departure from Colani’s organic, curvy aesthetic. I was able to learn little about the gestation or inspiration for this piece, but did learn that it was designed two years after Colani paid his first study visit to Japan. It makes sense, then, that he’d have been thinking of ways to compress multiple functions into limited space.
