Madrid artist combines sculpture and photography to make clay illustrations

Photorealistic lighting and sculpting come together splendidly in Irma Gruenholz’s new series of clay portraits.

Gruenholz, the Madrid-based sculptor artist and illustrator, is the mastermind behind these “clay illustrations” which neatly balance sculpting, painting, lighting, and photography. What at first appear to be 2D illustrations are in fact figurines made from modelling clay and plasticine. Gruenholz has become quite notorious for her clay illustrations as her work has been seen in advertisements, books and posters around the world, with three of her portraits being selected for the Society of Illustrators 57th Exhibition in NYC this year. Check out some Gruenholz’s unique clay illustrations below and learn more about her process on Brown Paper Bag.
