Magical worlds made larger-than-life with giant marionettes

Puppet shows generally conjure images of small-scale storytelling— a crowd of children gathered around a single performer telling wondrous tales in hushed voices. However, the street theater performance troupe Royal de Luxe has turned this paradigm upside down, creating marionette puppets that are larger than life.

Requiring cranes and several people to negotiate each puppet, the group defines itself as “a company of inventors, stuntmen, poets and scrap-dealers all at once, led by Jean-Luc Courcoult.” The company is currently based in Nantes, France and has 2015 performances scheduled for Australia, Belgium, Chile, and the U.S.
