MakerBot's New 3D Printer Can 3D Print Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Nylon

MakerBot has announced the Method Carbon Fiber Edition, an upgrade to their Method 3D printer. As the name suggests, the machine has been modified to handle carbon-fiber-reinforced nylon, which “allows users to print stronger and more accurate parts in carbon fiber-reinforced nylon,” the company writes. “Due to its high strength, heat resistance, and stiffness, it can also be used to print metal replacement parts.”

“The new MakerBot Nylon Carbon Fiber material is an ideal lightweight alternative to metal for structural applications such as vehicular brackets and inspection gauges, manufacturing tools such as robotic end effectors, and under-hood applications.”

“Used as an alternative to metal parts, carbon fiber can help reduce costs and increase overall efficiencies for companies.”

The CFEs come in two flavors: The $3,500 Method and the $4,900 Method X, the latter of which can handle a greater range of engineering composites and polymers. Tech specs for both models are available here.
