Minimalist Dutch EV Roadster Channels the Classic Porsche Speedster

The TC2, an EV roadster, looks like a toy version of the classic Porsche 356. Manufactured in batches by Dutch startup Carice, the bare-bones car weighs just 590kg (1,300 lbs) and is meant to appeal to the driving purist.

“If you just take away unnecessary things for long enough, you will get back t the essence of driving,” the company says. “The Carice TC2 is elegant, stylish and at the same time uncomplicated. This delivers electric driving in its most pure and elementary form.”

I’m digging the old-school minimalist interior, particularly the gauges and switches, but I do think they’ve gone too far with the brushed-steel; reflective surfaces aren’t a good choice for a dashboard, particularly in an open-topped car.

There is no option to swap out the dash, though they do offer multiple color options for both the exterior and the vegan leather interior:

The car’s battery is good for a 200km (124-mile) range, with an option to upgrade to a larger battery that’ll get you 300km (186 miles). Beyond that, performance specs have not been released.

One thing I’m unsure of is how they were able to skirt Europe’s stringent safety regulations. As far as I can tell there’s no airbags—the steering wheel is just metal and wood—and the windshield and rollbar don’t inspire confidence.

The EU-market-only vehicle sells for €44,500 (USD $48,767) excluding taxes.
