The Hobbits had been sleeping a lot more than usual and they began to wonder why, so they started to investigate whether they’d been drugged, whether they were eating a bad fungus, or whether a spell had been cast upon the shire. But their investigation led them to an unlikely source of sleepiness- the Merlot Bilbo and the dwarves had brought back with them from the Mirkwood. It seems Mirkwood Merlot is made with a touch of spider’s venom, which isn’t enough to kill but is just the right dose to send a Halfling off to slumberland after but one glass. However, sleeping happens to be one of their favorite pastimes, so the Hobbits continued to imbibe and enjoy the sleep
