Something sort of in-between the two—i.e. if you’ve got a static roof rack, and want an easier way to access it—is this clever Moki Door Step.
Made of aluminum, the Moki simply latches onto the existing door latch of your car. A rubber bumper on the back prevents it from marring your car’s paint.
Because automotive safety regulations require that latch to withstand 2,000 pounds of lateral force and 2,500 pounds of vertical force, it’s not going to give; and the Moki itself is rated for 400 pounds.
Despite its strength, the Moki weighs just under two pounds and stows easily in a glove compartment.
Firefighter Zach Brown invented the Moki for his wife, whose height made it difficult for her to reach the roof rack of their car.
